About the Book Now available in its complete form, including the Chinese characters Book Synopsis Sun Tzu's The Art of War has been the premier manual of Chinese military strategy for the past two millennia and, as thousands of Asian businessmen can attest, this classic work is as applicable to the corporate world as it is to the battlefield. This is the only contemporary edition of the classic Lionel Giles translation to contain all of the translator's original notes, to help you better understand Sun Tzu's powerful maxims and apply them in your daily life. John Minford's foreword brings insights to this classic text and its timeless relevance to the modern world. BILINGUAL EDITION: COMPLETE CHINESE AND ENGLISH TEXT This edition also marks the first time Giles' translation has been converted to Hanyu Pinyin--the standard Chinese romanization system. Additionally, the book contains the full Chinese language version of the text, along with Giles' extensive notes, with their original Chinese text references to the historical Chinese commentators, making this edition a treasure to military scholars, martial artists, and those planning to use Sun Tzu's strategies to conquer the business world. Sun Tzu's book will arm you with the knowledge that has allowed those who have studied this classic to gain victory--and often, total domination--over those who remain ignorant of its sage advice. About the Author Sun Tzu, originally named Sun Wu and also called Chang Qing, authored The Art of War in the sixth century BC. About the Book Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience and psychology, the author shows how the difference between good and bad decision-making has nothing to do with how much information can be processed quickly, but on the few particular details on which people focus. Book Synopsis The landmark book that has revolutionized the way we understand leadership and decision making -- from #1 bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell. In his breakthrough bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant--in the blink of an eye--that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work--in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others? In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of blink: the election of Warren Harding; New Coke; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of thin-slicing--filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables. About The Author Malcolm Gladwell is the author of five New York Times bestsellers: The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and David and Goliath. He is also the co-founder of Pushkin Industries, an audio content company that produces the podcasts Revisionist History, which reconsiders things both overlooked and misunderstood, and Broken Record, where he, Rick Rubin, and Bruce Headlam interview musicians across a wide range of genres. Gladwell has been included in the Time 100 Most Influential People list and touted as one of Foreign Policy'sTop Global Thinke

Book Synopsis Nautilus Book Award Winner - Gold We are all touched at some point by the dark emotions of grief, fear, or despair. In an age of global threat, these emotions have be widespread and overwhelming. While conventional wisdom warns us of the harmful effects of negative emotions, this revolutionary book offers a more hopeful view: there is a redemptive power in our worst feelings. Seasoned psychotherapist Miriam Greenspan argues that it's the avoidance and denial of the dark emotions that results in the escalating psychological disorders of our time: depression, anxiety, addiction, psychic numbing, and irrational violence. And she shows us how to trust the wisdom of the dark emotions to guide, heal, and transform our lives and our world. Drawing on inspiring stories from her psychotherapy practice and personal life, and including a complete set of emotional exercises, Greenspan teaches the art of emotional alchemy by which grief turns to gratitude, fear opens the door to joy, and despair bes the ground of a more resilient faith in life. Review Quotes "Greenspan writes intensely and compassionately. This is a committed, serious look at the emotions most of us would rather sweep under the rug."--Publishers Weekly "The gold standard of books on difficult emotions. This book has the power to heal and change your life and the way you live it."--Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom "A crucial book that teaches us to alter fundamentally our fearful relationship to deep feelings."--Kim Chernin, Los Angeles Times "A book of remarkable depth. The author is a brilliant thinker and a natural storyteller. I've read countless books about the difficult emotions. None is as helpful and riveting as this one--or offers as much hope for our personal suffering and turbulent times."--Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., author of The Dance of Anger "A modern day alchemist, Greenspan teaches us to turn our pain into wisdom and our fear and sorrow into energy to improve the world. She offers us a clear and profound analysis of what we must do as individuals and as a species to survive these troubled times."--Mary Pipher, Ph.D., author of Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls "This remarkable book has taught me a whole new way of thinking."--Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People "A beautiful piece of work destined to be a perennial classic."--Martha Beck, author of Expecting Adam and The Joy Diet "This is a beautifully written, deeply compassionate, and revolutionary approach to working with the most difficult human emotions. Miriam Greenspan teaches us how to trust our emotions and how to listen to hear the truth they reveal. This is a practical guide that illuminates how the wisdom of the heart can heal ourselves, each other, and our world."--Janet Surrey, Ph.D., founding scholar of the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute at the Stone Center, Wellesley College "Miriam Greenspan will help you turn the lead in your life into gold of joy and peace. Of equal importance, she helps us see that such changes are not for ourselves alone, but for the whole world."--Henry Grayson, Ph.D., author of The New Physics of Love "This book is essential reading for all people. It beholds that which is tragic about the human condition but embraces it in a therapeutic and consoling way. Greenspan describes enormous grief and terror--her own and the world's--and explains what it means to surrender to fear, to face straight into it, to 'let it be' as the royal road to sanity, exuberance, and freedom. She is a trustworthy guide for us in these times."--Phyllis Chesler, author of Women and Madness and Woman's Inhumanity to Woman "Written with grace, clarity, and humility, this book beautifully integrates the psychological, spiritual, and political wisdom necessary for personal and social transformation."--Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor, Tikkun magazine and author of Spirit Matters: Global Healing and the Wisdom of the Soul "This riveting book is a powerful, urgent appeal for a transformation of our values and the way we conduct our lives. The author is a therapist but she writes not only for other therapists, who will deepen and expand their practice from their reading, but for all of us who struggle daily not to be defeated by the global darkness in which we live."--Sophie Freud, Professor Emerita, Simmons College School of Social Work "This is a profound and liberating book. Miriam Greenspan helps us to discover the life-redeeming power of the very emotion we most fear. Thus she opens ways to both our integrity and our freedom."--Joanna Macy, author of Widening Circles About the Author Miriam Greenspan is an internationally known psychotherapist, writer, and speaker who has helped to establish the field of women's psychology. She is the acclaimed author of A New Approach to Women and Therapy and lives in Boston with her husband and two daughters.

Review Quotes Named one of The Fifty Best Golf Books Every Golfer Should Read by Golf Digest Mystical -- The New York Times Almost 50 years ago, Michael Murphy penned what many consider to be the definitive book on golf -- not that he knew it at the time. But to this day, the magical power and mystical musings of golf in the kingdom inspire -- Golf "In the late '70s, I discovered my caddie Mike [Fluff] Cowan had one book in his possession -- a copy of Golf in the Kingdom, which was all torn apart and held together by tape and rubber bands. And he was right." -- Peter Jacobsen "It gives us the language to talk about the spiritual side of the game, which I have always believed in." -- Brad Faxon "a golf classic if any exists in our day." -- John Updike ...this book is a slow burn that relies on dialogue to make the reader think and examine why they play golf. About the Book "First published in Great Britain by Allen Lane The Penguin Press 1999."--T.p. verso. Book Synopsis Andrew George's masterly new translation (The Times) of the world's first truly great work of literature A Penguin Classic Miraculously preserved on clay tablets dating back as much as four thousand years, the poem of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, is the world's oldest epic, predating Homer by many centuries. The story tells of Gilgamesh's adventures with the wild man Enkidu, and of his arduous journey to the ends of the earth in quest of the Babylonian Noah and the secret of immortality. Alongside its themes of family, friendship and the duties of kings, the Epic of Gilgamesh is, above all, about mankind's eternal struggle with the fear of death. The Babylonian version has been known for over a century, but linguists are still deciphering new fragments in Akkadian and Sumerian. Andrew George's gripping translation brilliantly combines these into a fluent narrative and will long rank as the definitive English Gilgamesh. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. Review Quotes "It's among the oldest surviving works of Western civilization, from before literature was literature. It's my go-to whenever loss and life have tumbled me (often). Amazingly, and perhaps depressingly (When will they ever learn?), Gilgamesh tackles all the issues we are dealing with today: a bad leader and how he bes an enlightened one (here's hoping), environmental degradation, class and race -- i.e. who gets to be called human -- lust and love; loss and death. The language is haunting, incantatory, at the border of song and silence." --Julia Alvarez Andrew George has skillfully bridged the chasm between a scholarly re-edition and a popular work" --London Review of Books "Humankind's first literary achievement...Gilgamesh should compel us as the well-spring of which we are inheritors...Andrew George provides an excellent critical and historical introduction." --Paul Binding, Independent on Sunday "This volume will endure as one of the milestones markers...[George] expertly and easily conducts his readers on a delightful and moving epic journey." --Samuel A. Meier, Times Literary Supplement "Appealingly presented and very readably translated...it still comes as an exhilarating surprise to find the actions and emotions of the Sumerian superhero coming to us with absolute immediacy over 30-odd centuries. --Scotsman "Andrew George has formed an English text from the best of the tablets, differentiating his complex sources but allowing the general reader a clear run at one of the first enduring stories ever told." --Peter Stothard, The Times "An exemplary combination of scholarship and lucidity...very impressive...invaluable as a convenient guide to all the different strands which came together to produce the work we now call Gilgamesh." --Alan Wall, Literary Review About the Author Andrew George is Professor of Babylonian in the Department of Languages and Culture of Near and Middle East at University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies.

Book Synopsis This epic saga of brotherhood and rivalry, of loyalty and treachery, of victory and death forms part of the indelible core of classical Chinese culture and continues to fascinate modern-day readers. In 220 EC, the 400-year-old rule of the mighty Han dynasty came to an end and three kingdoms contested for control of China. The novel first appeared in print in 1522. This edition, translated in the mid-1920s by C. H. Brewitt-Taylor, is based on a shortened and simplified version which appeared in the 1670s. An Introduction to this reprint by Robert E. Hegel, Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Washington University, provides an insightful commentary on the historical background to the novel, its literary origins and its main characters.
